Open source software development models are proof that large-scale, collaborative creative cultures drive powerful competitive advantage. As open source moves beyond the world of software development, messaging must move from evangelical models and must begin to focus more on the practice of open source and creativity. If Malcolm Gladwell is right, then it takes 10,000 hours for an individual to grasp the nuance and expertise necessary to play that role. That’s a small community of practitioners. And that is the next challenge for open source.
